EIC Ushers in a New Era for Deaf Students with STEM Mentorship Project

by Sejoro Ekundayo

On November 20, 2024, Equity and Inclusion Connect Initiative (EIC), a trailblazing NGO dedicated to equitable and inclusive education, launched its groundbreaking STEM Mentorship Project at the Government School for the Deaf, Ogbete, Enugu.

This forward-thinking program is designed to empower Deaf students to dream big and achieve success in STEM careers, breaking through traditional barriers while nurturing leadership potential among the Deaf community.

At the event, Mrs. Ugwu-Olaniyi, Executive Director and visionary behind the initiative, declared, “This project is a beacon of hope for Deaf students in STEM. We are here to affirm their abilities and provide the resources they need to succeed.” She highlighted the ambitious goal of the project tagged EquitySTEM Connect: reaching Deaf students nationwide and partnering with educators and students to create a Nigerian Sign Language glossary tailored to STEM subjects.

Drawing from her own experience as a Deaf professional, Mrs. Ugwu-Olaniyi shared her inspiring journey, proving that determination can defy odds. She also applauded the achievements of Okoh Vincent Tochukwu, a Deaf Physics graduate and NYSC corps member, whose story resonated deeply as he shared strategies for tackling STEM challenges.

A key highlight of the initiative was the establishment of a STEM Club, offering students an avenue to explore science, hone leadership skills, and discover new opportunities. Six students assumed leadership roles in the club, with Vincent appointed as their staff adviser to mentor and guide them.

An interactive session revealed pressing challenges faced by Deaf students, including the lack of a Nigerian Sign Language glossary for scientific terms, which complicates their understanding of STEM concepts. The discussions sparked enthusiasm and a resolve to address these barriers head-on.

The Principal of the Government School for the Deaf, Mrs. Oba Zita, lauded the project as a groundbreaking step in inclusive education. She committed her support by appointing a supervising teacher and scheduling regular STEM Club meetings to keep the momentum alive.

Excited and grateful, Deaf students described the program as life-changing, offering hope and actionable steps to overcome obstacles in STEM education. The initiative marks a significant milestone in creating an inclusive, accessible future for Nigeria’s Deaf community.
