Disability Group Petitions Authorities Over Alleged Job Discrimination in Kano

by Inclusive News Network

The Kano Youth Wing of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB) has petitioned relevant authorities over the alleged discrimination against a person with visual impairment during a recruitment exercise conducted by D-Light Solar Energy in Kano State.

In a statement signed by its Youth Leader, Comrade Hamza Aminu Fagge, the association alleged that Mr. Yusuf Adam Muhammad successfully completed and passed all stages of the recruitment process for the position of Solar Retailer but was denied employment because of his visual impairment.

The group said Muhammad had disclosed his disability during the virtual interview and still met the recruitment requirements.

According to the association, the applicant was asked to remain at the company’s office from about 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on June 25, 2026, before he was allegedly given ₦1,000 for transportation by the Area Business Manager, Mrs. Mansura Isa, and told he would be contacted later.

The association claimed he was subsequently not offered the job. It also alleged that a courtesy visit letter sent to Aspira Nigeria Ltd on the matter was rejected on the grounds that the company does not handle disability-related issues.

The association described the alleged action as a violation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which prohibits disability-based discrimination and promotes equal employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

It called on the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, security agencies, civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders to investigate the allegations and ensure appropriate action is taken if any violation of the law is established. As of the time of filing this report, D-Light Solar Energy had not publicly responded to the allegations.
