The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities has organized a two-day in-house capacity-building training for staff of its Accounts and Audit Departments as part of efforts to strengthen financial management, accountability, and compliance within the Commission.
The training, held on May 6 and 7, 2026, at Life Refreshing Cafeteria in Abuja, brought together 21 participants and focused on improving staff knowledge of current public sector accounting standards and procedures in line with ongoing Federal Government financial reforms. The programme was coordinated by the Commission’s Finance and Accounts Department.
Speaking during the opening session, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Barr. Ayuba Gufwan, stressed the importance of developing internal capacity to reduce dependence on external consultants. He noted that the Commission previously experienced challenges due to limited expertise within its Accounting and Audit units, resulting in poor knowledge retention and difficulty in maintaining continuity after consultants completed their assignments.
According to him, the training would help equip staff with the practical knowledge needed to improve the Commission’s financial operations and strengthen transparency and accountability. He urged participants to apply the lessons learned in their daily responsibilities.
The training sessions focused on key aspects of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), including the preparation of government financial statements, management of public assets and liabilities, and ongoing reforms in public sector accounting practices. Interactive discussions were also held to address practical challenges faced by staff in the discharge of their duties.
Director of Finance and Accounts, Mrs. Zainab Sulaiman Shehu, expressed satisfaction with the level of participation and engagement recorded during the programme. Facilitators for the training were drawn from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to continuous staff development, describing it as a key strategy for improving service delivery and promoting transparency, accountability, and efficiency across its operations.
