In a move to reinforce transparency, accountability, and institutional efficiency, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has launched a three-day intensive capacity-building program for its staff. Organized by the Commission’s Internal Audit Department, the training runs from Tuesday, May 20 to Thursday, May 22, 2025, in Abuja.
With the theme, “Understanding the Working of the Internal Audit Relating to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities,” the initiative aims to enhance staff knowledge of audit procedures and foster stronger interdepartmental collaboration.
Declaring the training open, Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to nurturing a competent workforce.
“Training and retraining are vital to any thriving institution. By investing in our people, we’re ensuring sustained productivity, efficiency, and effective service delivery. This program reflects our dedication to building a results-driven public service,” he said.
He urged participants to apply the insights gained for the collective progress of the Commission, while commending the Internal Audit Department for its proactive leadership in organizing the training.
Speaking on the essence of the program, Mr. Barretto M.O., Head of the Audit Department, described the training as a strategic step toward demystifying internal audit processes within the Commission.
“This training is tailored to be practical, interactive, and results-oriented. It equips staff with the tools and knowledge necessary to improve service delivery and build a culture of transparency,” he explained.
Mr. Barretto also advocated the establishment of a dedicated Aids, Grants, and Donations Unit to ensure structured tracking of donor funds, emphasizing the critical role of proper documentation in accountability.
Participants are engaging with key modules including internal control systems, audit compliance frameworks, interdepartmental audit coordination, and best practices in public financial management. Staff from various departments are participating, reflecting the Commission’s integrated approach to institutional development.
The Commission reiterated its resolve to align with global best practices in governance, ensuring its operations reflect the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
