The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Governor of the old Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), His Excellency Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur.
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who died at the age of 90, was an astute businessman, public servant and politician whose contributions to Nigeria spanned public administration, industry and national politics.
In a condolence message, Chief Gufwan described the death of the elder statesman as a huge loss to Nigeria, noting that the country had lost a colossus and a valuable national asset whose wealth of experience remained significant to national development.
He said Tukur’s distinguished public service and contributions to the political and economic development of the country would continue to be remembered by Nigerians.
Chief Gufwan also highlighted the late elder statesman’s experience of living with a mobility challenge in his later years, noting that he relied on a wheelchair to support his mobility and maintain a degree of independence in his daily activities.
According to him, the late Tukur’s experience underscores the importance of ensuring that persons with mobility challenges have access to appropriate assistive devices that enable them to participate meaningfully in society.
He noted that mobility aids such as wheelchairs could significantly improve the independence, dignity and quality of life of persons with disabilities, particularly older persons and those living with mobility-related challenges.
The NCPWD Executive Secretary therefore called for sustained attention and investment in the provision of appropriate mobility and assistive devices for persons who require them, stressing that such support is essential to promoting inclusion and enabling people to live with greater independence.
Chief Gufwan said the passing of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was not only a loss to his family, Adamawa State and Nigeria but also to the wider community of persons with disabilities.
He described the deceased as one of the nation’s elder statesmen whose life and service had left an enduring mark on the country.
On behalf of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Chief Gufwan extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, the people of Adamawa State and Nigerians across the country.
He prayed that God Almighty would grant the deceased eternal rest and give his family, friends and associates the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
The Commission joins Nigerians in mourning the death of the former governor and former PDP national chairman, while honouring his contributions to the nation’s development and public life.
