The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity by awarding N1,000,000 each to several disability-focused organizations for advocacy and awareness initiatives. The beneficiaries include Dyslexia Nigeria, the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, the Down Syndrome Association, the Dwarf Association of Nigeria, and the National Association for the Blind, Lagos State Chapter.
General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized the critical role of awareness campaigns in breaking down barriers and fostering a society where persons with disabilities can thrive. She encouraged the organizations to channel the funds into impactful initiatives that highlight the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities while advocating for their inclusion in every aspect of life.
“Awareness is the foundation of a society where equal opportunities exist for all, regardless of physical or mental challenges,” she noted. Represented by Mrs. Omolade Sonubi, LASODA’s Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal reiterated the need to shift societal attitudes to recognize people with disabilities as vital contributors to the community.
Additionally, LASODA extended its support to the Albinism Association of Nigeria by donating protective gear, including umbrellas, sunscreen, hats, and other sun protection items. This initiative aims to address the health risks people with albinism face due to increased susceptibility to skin cancer from sun exposure.
At the presentation ceremony, Mr. Shola Akinbule, LASODA’s Director of Finance and Accounts, lauded the initiative as a testament to Lagos State’s dedication to upholding the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. He highlighted the state government’s commitment to tackling challenges such as accessibility and social acceptance, ensuring that disability does not hinder anyone from living a fulfilling life.
“This support underscores our belief in fostering awareness and driving societal engagement to create a more inclusive Lagos,” Akinbule remarked.
The initiative not only enhances advocacy for inclusivity but also reinforces the importance of educating the public on safeguarding the health and well-being of individuals with albinism.
