In a strategic move to promote inclusion and economic independence, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has launched an Agricultural Skills Training and Empowerment Program for Persons with Disabilities in Plateau State.
The week-long training, taking place from May 19 to 24, 2025, at Novel Suites and Resort in Rayfield, Jos, is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to thrive in agriculture.
Representing the Executive Secretary, Burki Ayuba Gufwan, the Director of the Department of Social Integration, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to inclusive development.
“I welcome you all to this auspicious occasion marking the commencement of Agricultural Training for Persons with Disabilities in Jos, Plateau State,”
He noted that the initiative is part of NCPWD’s broader strategy to promote inclusive economic participation through agriculture.
“We recognize the potential of persons with disabilities and are committed to providing them with the necessary training and support to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy,” Gufwan stated.
Acknowledging the barriers many persons with disabilities face in the agricultural sector, the Executive Secretary stressed the need for intentional and sustained support:
“With targeted training, accessible infrastructure, and the right support systems, persons with disabilities can thrive in agriculture and even become industry innovators.”
He further revealed that the Commission will soon begin distributing farming equipment and fertilizers to training participants and other farmers with disabilities across the country:
“This is about more than just training—we are empowering. We are committed to creating sustainable change.”
The event was attended by Mr. Aaron Shindol, Plateau State Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), and the CEO of Zebra Multiservices Ltd. Both leaders encouraged participants to maximize the opportunity and use their new skills to uplift their communities.
“Agriculture is a pathway to self-reliance. This training is a seed—one that we believe will bear lasting fruit,” Gufwan added.
The program combines theoretical sessions with hands-on practical training to ensure participants gain real-world agricultural skills that can immediately impact their livelihoods.
