A team of deaf students from a special school in Bauchi State has emerged as the overall winner of the National Girls in ICT Competition 2026, earning national recognition and bringing pride to the state through their outstanding innovation and technological excellence.
The students secured the top position with their groundbreaking project, “Hands That Speak,” a technology-driven solution designed to bridge communication barriers and foster greater inclusion for persons with hearing impairments. The project impressed judges with its creativity, relevance, and potential to improve accessibility for the deaf community.
Their remarkable achievement has been hailed as a significant milestone for inclusive education, disability inclusion, and the advancement of girls in science and technology. It also demonstrates the immense potential of young persons with disabilities when given access to quality education, mentorship, and opportunities to showcase their talents.
Education and technology stakeholders described the victory as a win not only for the students but also for Bauchi State and the broader movement to promote diversity and inclusion in the ICT sector. They noted that the success of the team serves as a powerful reminder that disability is not a limitation to innovation, excellence, or leadership.
The students were widely praised for their resilience, determination, and ingenuity, with many observers expressing hope that their accomplishment would inspire more girls, particularly those with disabilities, to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology.
The Bauchi State Bureau for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), alongside supporters of the initiative, congratulated the students, their teachers, mentors, and partners for their dedication and commitment. The Bureau described the victory as a proud moment for Bauchi State and Nigeria, reaffirming the importance of creating inclusive opportunities that enable every child to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
