Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Anambra State have called for the creation of specialized courts to handle disability-related cases. This demand was made during a recent workshop organized by the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ASDRC), with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC), held in Awka, the state capital.
Participants at the workshop emphasized the pressing need for these courts to safeguard their rights and ensure justice in cases involving PWDs. Despite existing laws and policies designed to protect their rights, many PWDs continue to face discrimination and challenges in accessing justice, largely due to the absence of disability-friendly court facilities.
The push for the establishment of special courts has gained momentum as PWDs in Anambra State intensify their advocacy. According to Voice of Nigeria, these courts would not only address the hurdles faced by PWDs in the justice system but also promote accessibility and ensure the efficient handling of cases involving individuals with disabilities.
In their resolution, the group highlighted the establishment of these courts as a critical step toward overcoming the barriers PWDs encounter in seeking justice. This move is seen as essential for fostering inclusivity and ensuring that the rights of all citizens in Anambra State are upheld.
