The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, inclusion and empowerment of persons with visual impairments, pledging stronger collaboration with disability organisations to improve their quality of life.
The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, gave the assurance on October 8 when the executive members and representatives of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB), Anambra State Chapter, led by its Chairman, Comrade Okamelu Ernest, paid her a courtesy visit at the Women Development Centre in Awka.
During the visit, the delegation congratulated the Commissioner on her appointment, introduced the association’s leadership and outlined its mission to empower persons with visual impairments across the state. The team also briefed her on preparations for the 2026 International White Cane Day celebration scheduled for October 17.
Responding, Onyekesi commended the association for its advocacy and commitment to protecting the rights and interests of persons with visual impairments. She stressed that government social welfare interventions must be inclusive and responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
The Commissioner assured the delegation that her Ministry would work closely with the association to strengthen support systems and promote the dignity, independence and well-being of its members. She added that sustained partnerships between government and disability-focused organisations were crucial to removing barriers and ensuring that persons with disabilities participate fully in society.
The visit underscored the importance of collaboration between government and disability organisations in advancing inclusion and ensuring that persons with visual impairments are not left behind in Anambra State’s development agenda.
