The Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism (GAPA) has called for greater inclusion and collective action to advance the rights of persons with disabilities as Ghana commemorates National Disability Day.
National Disability Day, observed annually on June 23, marks the passage of Ghana’s Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715), and serves as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of persons with disabilities while advocating for their full inclusion in society.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, GAPA joined the disability community in celebrating the resilience and accomplishments of persons with disabilities across the country. The association stressed that disability inclusion is a shared responsibility and urged government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, communities, and the general public to work together to eliminate barriers that hinder the participation of persons with disabilities.
GAPA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the rights, dignity, safety, and inclusion of persons with albinism, while expressing solidarity with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) nationwide. The association also commended disability advocates, caregivers, allies, and organizations for their efforts in advancing accessibility, equal opportunities, quality education, healthcare, employment, and social protection.
The organization called on the public to embrace diversity, reject stigma and discrimination, and support the creation of inclusive communities where everyone can thrive regardless of disability. It further encouraged disability organizations to strengthen partnerships and amplify their collective voice to ensure that no person with a disability is left behind.
As Ghana marks this year’s National Disability Day, GAPA renewed its commitment to building a society founded on inclusion, equality, accessibility, and respect for the rights of all persons with disabilities.
