As part of activities to mark the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), Hope Alive for Possibilities Initiative (HAPI) has renewed calls for the enactment of a disability law in Benue State.
The group emphasized that such a law would ensure the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and provide them with legal access to opportunities that promote inclusivity and equality.
HAPI organized a walk to commemorate the day, drawing attention to the plight of PWDs in the state. The walk culminated at the iconic Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) Square, where advocates and supporters converged to discuss the urgent need for legislative action. The event sought to amplify the voices of PWDs and push for reforms that would address their challenges.
Speaking at the event, Avershima Akighir, the Executive Director of HAPI and a passionate disability advocate, called on the Benue State House of Assembly to expedite action on the Disability Bill submitted by the Executive Arm.
Akighir emphasized the need for unity among PWDs, urging them to collaborate in demanding the enactment of the Disability Law.
She expressed disappointment that Benue remains the only state in North Central Nigeria without such legislation, despite the widespread recognition of disability rights across the country.
In her remarks, Akighir stated, “Benue State is the only State without a Disability Law in North Central Nigeria.”
She highlighted how the absence of this critical legislation continues to hinder the social and economic inclusion of PWDs, leaving many vulnerable to discrimination and marginalization.
Also addressing participants at the rally, Mr. Bem Anshe, the immediate past Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and the Personal Assistant to the Governor on Persons with Special Needs, commended HAPI for its relentless efforts.
He assured attendees of the state government’s commitment to passing the Disability Law. According to Anshe, the government recognizes the importance of this legislation and is working towards ensuring its enactment.
The event underscored the collective resolve of PWDs and their advocates to push for systemic change. It also served as a reminder of the critical role legislation plays in fostering an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive. As the world observes IDPD 2024, the hope remains that Benue State will take concrete steps to join the list of states championing disability rights through robust legal frameworks.
