Founder of Deaf-in-Tech, Dr. Arowolo Ayoola, has called for implementation of Nigeria’s disability policies, particularly the five per cent job provision for Persons with Disabilities as stipulated in the Disability Act.
Speaking at an advocacy organised by Data-Lead Africa to mark International Day for Persons with Disabilities in Abuja, Dr. Ayoola noted the need for practical measures to bridge economic gaps for neglected communities.
“We cannot continue to celebrate existence of laws and policies when persons with disabilities still face barriers to employment, education, and leadership,” Dr. Ayoola said.
He stressed that the Disability Act must move from policy to action, creating real pathways for PwDs to access opportunities and thrive.
Dr. Ayoola noted the systemic barriers faced by PwDs, noting without intentional planning and execution, these barriers will exclude millions.
He said inclusion is not charity but a necessity for a more equitable and wealthy society.
Deaf-in-Tech, under Ayoola’s leadership, has pioneered how inclusion can empower neglected communities.
By equipping deaf individuals with skills like Power BI, Python coding, and Excel, the organisation has created pathways for economic empowerment in tech-driven economy.
Dr. Ayoola reiterated the principle of “Nothing About Us Without Us,” urging policymakers to work with PwDs to shape programmes and systems that address real barriers.
He said government can work with others to ensure measured outcomes for PwDs.
At the event, participants displayed messages: “We’re Deaf, We’re Part of Society. Plan for Us, and Plan with Us.”
He said Nigeria’s future depends on its ability to include everyone in the national vision for growth.
“Together, we can create a society where no one is left behind,” he said.
