The Abia State Government has mulled plans to construct a secondary school for the deaf in the State.
The State’s Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kennedy Nwangwa disclosed this during his visit to Special Education Centre for the Deaf.
The visit by the commissioner, INN learnt, was facilitated by the Chairman, Abia State Deaf Association (ABSDA) led by El-dad Monu who said it was geared towards bringing his attention to the plights of Special Education Centre for the Deaf, Aba, the commercial city of Abia State.
“He and his team from Abia State Ministry of Education visited the aforementioned school. During the process of inspecting the school, the Honourable Commissioner was impressed with the school for having enough facilities to start the secondary school for the Deaf along with dormitory.
“He promised that the Secondary school will kick off from September this year 2020. The Ministry will do the needful to assure that everything is fixed before September, 2020,” Monu said.
The Commissioner’s visit to the school triggered wild excitement from the principal and staff on learning a new school block was going to be constructed.
“On hearing this, the principal, chairman and members of PTA, and staffs of the school were dancing in joy and appreciation,” the ABSDA boss said.
The principal in her address said that since the establishment of this school, no Commissioner for Education has visited to know the welfare and needs of the school and pupils.
She deeply thanked the Commissioner and his team from the Ministry and asked God to bless him for his great love.
“Let’s put the Honourable Commissioner and Ministry in our prayer for the fulfilment of this demands for our children towards the realization of National Policy on Special Education, Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (CRPD) under article 24 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4,” Monu added.
