Lagos – The World Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria, in collaboration with key stakeholders, marked World Down Syndrome Day with a call for improved inclusivity and enhanced support systems for persons with disabilities.
The event, held at the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Secretariat Event Hall, brought together government officials, medical professionals, disability rights advocates, and community leaders to discuss ways to bridge existing gaps in healthcare, education, and employment for individuals with Down syndrome.
Representatives from the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), including Dr. Olufunmilayo Adekola, Director of Monitoring, Orientation, and Evaluation, and Mr. Akeem Kelani, Director of Social Development and Integration, were present at the event.
In her opening remarks, Mrs. Nike Denis, a leading member of the foundation, stressed the need for a collective shift toward inclusivity. She urged government agencies, private organizations, religious institutions, and individuals to actively contribute to creating an enabling environment for persons with disabilities.
She highlighted the importance of improving healthcare services, expanding educational opportunities, and providing job placements to ensure full societal integration.
The event, themed “Improving Support Systems – Access to Healthcare,” focused on the challenges individuals with Down syndrome face, particularly in accessing quality medical care. Experts emphasized the need for disability-friendly health policies, specialized training for medical personnel, and affordable healthcare services tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities. Discussions also centered on the broader need for accessible education and employment opportunities, as well as stronger legal protections to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities.
Among the participants were government representatives, medical professionals, educational therapists, legal practitioners, and disability rights advocates, all of whom contributed valuable insights on strengthening support systems. Also present were representatives from the disability community and parents of children with Down syndrome, who shared personal experiences and challenges in navigating existing structures.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from stakeholders to push for policy implementation, stronger government intervention, and increased public awareness. Speakers emphasized the importance of continuous advocacy and collaborative efforts to build an inclusive society where individuals with disabilities can access the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
