The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has reaffirmed his administration’s steadfast commitment to prioritizing students with disabilities, ensuring they receive the necessary support to thrive academically and socially.
He made this assurance during a specially organized Grand Welcome event for newly admitted students with disabilities for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The event, hosted by the Directorate of Student Affairs, took place at the Village Hostel cafeteria on the Naraguta Campus and was designed to foster inclusivity and a sense of belonging.
Welcoming the fresh cohort of students, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Chris Piwuna, encouraged them to uphold the values of their respective communities and serve as role models within the university. He reiterated the institution’s Zero Tolerance policy on social vices such as cultism and campus prostitution, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high moral and academic standards.
In an exciting announcement, Professor Piwuna disclosed that students with disabilities will have the opportunity to compete in the Para-Nuga Games, a development aimed at promoting inclusivity in sports. Additionally, he highlighted ongoing efforts by the university management to enhance accessibility and improve their overall campus experience.
Addressing the gathering, Professor Tanko Ishaya extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly admitted students and reiterated UNIJOS’ commitment to championing equal educational opportunities for students with disabilities. He emphasized that the university is actively formulating policies to support their academic journey, ensuring they are not restricted to special education programs but can enroll in any course of their choice.
“We are currently working on establishing specialized facilities for the Para-Nuga Games, and beyond that, we are committed to ensuring that students with disabilities can pursue any field of study without limitations. While we recognize that some of our existing structures may not have been designed with accessibility in mind, we are taking deliberate steps to ensure that all future architectural designs are inclusive and cater to the unique needs of special students,” Professor Tanko stated.
