In a move to enhance economic opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs), the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has empowered 78 entrepreneurs with critical financial support and specialized work tools to grow their businesses.
The Financing and Upskilling Program for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities, held yesterday at the STO Resource Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, focused on the theme: “Empowering Persons With Disabilities for Economic Independence and Self-Sufficiency.”
Speaking at the event, LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, reaffirmed the Lagos State government’s dedication to fostering inclusivity under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the THEMES Plus Agenda.
“This initiative is more than just financial assistance—it’s about equipping PWDs with the skills and resources they need to thrive as business owners. We want to ensure that they are not just beneficiaries of aid but key players in Lagos State’s economic growth,” she stated.
She explained that the state government has allocated tailored financial packages for different types of businesses, including support for parents of children with disabilities whose businesses have suffered setbacks.
“The ultimate goal is to uplift families, reduce economic strain, and create a ripple effect of prosperity that benefits not just individuals but the broader community,” she added.
INN reports that beyond financial aid, the program focuses on business development, capacity-building, and fostering innovation among PWD entrepreneurs. Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal also urged stakeholders to support efforts in breaking barriers and promoting an inclusive society where every individual, regardless of ability, has a chance to succeed.
Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youths and Social Development, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director of Child Development, Mrs. Bukayo Odukoya, described the event as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to an inclusive and prosperous society. She emphasized the need for stronger collaborations with the private sector to expand similar initiatives.
Beneficiaries at the event expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Lagos State government for empowering them to achieve financial independence and contribute meaningfully to society.
