The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening inclusive and equitable education across Nigeria, with a special focus on riverine and historically significant communities.
Garba disclosed this on Thursday in a statement on her official X handle after an inspection tour of communities in Lagos State, including Ibeshe, Moba, Ojo, Olorunda and Badagry Local Government Areas. The visit, she explained, is part of UBEC’s broader effort to guarantee quality basic education for every Nigerian child.
As part of the tour, Garba visited the Smart School project in Epeme, Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), where she assured His Royal Majesty, Oba Kososko, the Kabiyesi of Iworo, and other stakeholders that UBEC will complete the project to serve as a benchmark for innovation and quality learning in the state.
In a symbolic move, the UBEC chief also visited St. Thomas Primary School in Badagry, the first primary school in Nigeria, established in 1843. She emphasized the need to preserve the school’s historical legacy while upgrading its infrastructure to meet modern learning standards.
Garba further stated that the exercise was conducted in collaboration with top UBEC officials and local council leaders, including the chairmen of Badagry, Olorunda and Badagry West LCDAs. According to her, the partnership demonstrates the strong synergy between UBEC, grassroots administrations and traditional rulers in advancing education for all.
She concluded by appreciating stakeholders for their cooperation and reiterated UBEC’s determination to build a stronger educational foundation for Nigeria’s future generations.
