The Association of Spinal Cord Patients, Bauchi State Council, has called on the state government to establish a Physiotherapy and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Centre to meet the growing needs of spinal cord injury survivors.
Making the appeal at the 2025 World Spinal Cord Day celebration hosted by Yankari Express Corporation, the association’s chairman, Ilya Ismail, said the centre would make treatment more affordable and accessible for patients who often struggle to get the care they need.
Ismail praised the road safety measures introduced by Yankari Express and shared a touching story of a man who sustained a life-changing spinal cord injury after boarding a vehicle that had not been certified by Yankari Express inspectors.
“The victim had waited for a Yankari bus but became impatient and boarded another vehicle, which later got involved in an accident. His life was never the same again,” Ismail recounted.
Speaking at the event, Babaji Yunusa, General Manager of Yankari Express, highlighted that many spinal cord injuries stem from auto crashes caused by reckless driving, overspeeding, and overloading.
Yunusa assured passengers that the corporation remains committed to safety, noting that all Yankari drivers undergo regular training and that every bus is thoroughly inspected before setting out on a journey.
“We work with Vehicle Inspection Officers daily to ensure that no unfit vehicle is allowed on the road. This routine check helps us protect our passengers and reduce accidents,” Yunusa explained.
The commemoration underscored the critical link between road safety and spinal cord injury prevention, as well as the urgent need for a state-owned rehabilitation centre to support recovery efforts.
