As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Day, the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has called on leaders at all levels to recommit to building a truly inclusive nation where no citizen is left behind.
In a statement released on Wednesday to commemorate the occasion, CCD said that Independence Day should remind Nigerians of the importance of freedom, unity, and equal opportunity for all citizens, including more than 35 million Nigerians with disabilities.
“Today, as we celebrate the freedom and potential of our great nation, we reflect on the true meaning of independence — a nation where every citizen is free to participate, contribute, and thrive, regardless of ability,” the statement read.
The organisation issued a three-point call to action to accelerate disability inclusion across the country.
First, CCD urged all stakeholders — including government, private sector, and communities — to fast-track the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, stressing that physical, systemic, and attitudinal barriers must be removed to enable full participation of persons with disabilities.
Secondly, it emphasised the need to embrace diversity by recognising the talents, skills, and leadership qualities of persons with disabilities, describing them as “nation-builders whose voices and perspectives are essential for Nigeria’s development.”
Finally, CCD underscored that “inclusion is progress,” noting that societies that leave no one behind maximise their potential. It called for collective efforts to make Nigeria a model of disability inclusion in Africa and beyond.
“This Independence Day, we renew our commitment to the vision of a Nigeria where every Nigerian with a disability can live with dignity, independence, and full citizenship,” the statement concluded.
The organisation extended warm wishes to all Nigerians, saying: “May the green and white symbolise not just freedom, but a future that is accessible to all.”
