Members of the Special Needs Students Association (SNESA) of Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, Bauchi State, alongside the college’s Social Welfare Unit led by Malam Muhammad Nuhu Ali, paid a courtesy visit to the Provost, Prof. Sadiya Asabe Muhammad, on Wednesday.
During the visit, SNESA President, Ibrahim Ahmad Beli, commended the Provost and college management for their consistent support towards students with disabilities, especially the provision of tuition-free education. He described the gesture as a demonstration of the college’s inclusive values.
Beli also raised several issues affecting students with special needs. He requested the college’s intervention in the payment process for certificates of graduates from the special needs program affiliated with the University of Maiduguri. He further appealed for collaboration between the ICT unit and the college’s leadership to simplify registration processes for special needs students. He also emphasized the students’ desire to be included in upcoming college programmes to help them acquire practical skills for life after graduation.
A blind student shared the daily struggles faced in the college library due to the lack of Braille materials, noting that the situation often affects their academic performance, especially during examinations.
Responding to the delegation, the College Registrar, Malam Abdullahi Babaji, welcomed the visit and advised students to ensure they secure their JAMB registration numbers and admission letters, which are required to access the ongoing student loan registration.
The College Librarian explained that the absence of Braille materials in the library was due to past rehabilitation efforts. He acknowledged the students’ concerns and assured them that the college was doing its best to meet their needs despite the country’s current economic constraints.
In her address, the Provost, Prof. Sadiya Asabe Muhammad, reaffirmed the institution’s continued commitment to providing free education to students with special needs. She urged them to encourage their peers to register for JAMB, stressing that the college cannot process admissions for students without valid JAMB details.
Prof. Muhammad encouraged the students to remain committed to their academics, noting that hard work and dedication would enhance their learning experience and improve their chances of graduating with better grades.
