Maiduguri, Nigeria — In a bold effort to strengthen climate justice and promote disability inclusion, Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative Nigeria (SAVWIN) held a one-day capacity-building training for women with disabilities in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The workshop took place on Wednesday, April 29 and 30, 2025, at the Armani Event Center along Damboa Road and brought together various stakeholders and advocates for disability rights and environmental sustainability.
Facilitated by Irmiya Girama Mbaya and Mrs. Adama Yerima, the session addressed the unique and often overlooked challenges that women with disabilities face in the context of climate change. The training emphasized how the impacts of climate change, particularly in conflict-affected communities, exacerbate existing inequalities and vulnerabilities. Participants were introduced to inclusive approaches aimed at promoting resilience, equity, and sustainability in climate responses.
Discussions focused on the lack of accessible disaster preparedness measures, disruptions in healthcare, and economic instability that disproportionately affect women with disabilities. Participants explored strategies to ensure climate action plans are inclusive, emphasizing the use of appropriate tools, accessible communication methods, and participatory planning. Attention was also given to strengthening both individual and organizational capacities to implement inclusive climate policies, engage stakeholders, and develop programs that reflect the needs and contributions of women with disabilities.
The second session of the training highlighted the importance of forming effective partnerships for inclusive climate responses. Participants examined key concepts such as climate justice, equity, and disability inclusion, and discussed the roles of government, civil society, the private sector, and affected communities in ensuring that no one is left behind in climate action.
Interactive activities, including stakeholder mapping, role-playing, and action planning, enabled participants to identify practical steps their organizations could take to advance inclusion. Attendees were also introduced to relevant networks, resources, and support systems for disability-inclusive climate initiatives.
As the training concluded, participants reflected on their personal and organizational responsibilities in promoting inclusive change. A “commitment wall” was created, where attendees pledged to implement what they had learned and to advocate for disability-inclusive climate justice in their communities.
The Executive Director of SAVWIN, Miyausa Mshelia Wayuta, commended the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment, emphasizing that disability inclusion is essential to building climate resilience and achieving sustainable development.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates to the participants.
