DR. James David Lalu, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities has described the collapse of the school building of Saint Academy college Busa Buji, Jos North area council, Plateau State which killed about 22 persons including students and injured up to 150 people as devastating and tragic.

Lalu made this known yesterday in Abuja while speaking to newsmen on some of the reasons why persons with disabilities are on the increase in Nigeria.

“Since 2005, at least 152 buildings have collapsed in Lagos, according to researchers investigating construction disasters, and have killed several people and rendered so many with permanent disabilities ” he said

While condoling with the families of the injured and the deceased, the ES commended the Plateau State government for ensuring prompt medical attention by instructing hospitals to prioritize treatment without documentation or payment.

He further stated that the overall structural integrity of a building depends heavily on its foundation, ” low-quality materials can also compromise the building’s structural stability and lead to its collapse” he opined.
