Umuahia, Nigeria – The Abia State Commissioner for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, David Obinna Anyaele, has described the late Pope Francis as the most influential person with a disability, noting that his life and service inspired millions across the globe.
Anyaele, in a condolence message issued in Umuahia on Monday, expressed deep sorrow over the death of the pontiff, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m., at the age of 88 in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. “The Pope died of stroke and heart failure”, the Vatican said Monday morning.
“I watched him just yesterday on television, smiling as he pronounced ‘Happy Easter’ to the congregation at St. Peter’s Square. It was a moving sight,” Anyaele said.
He praised Pope Francis for using his personal experience with disability to promote inclusion, noting that his frequent travels in a wheelchair often compelled world leaders and institutions to provide access for all.
“He was a true symbol of hope for persons with disabilities,” Anyaele stated. “His life showed that disability is not a limitation and that no one is immune from becoming disabled. He was a tireless advocate for the marginalized and vulnerable, serving God with unwavering dedication.”
The Commissioner called on global leaders to emulate the humility and selfless service of the late pontiff, describing him as a rare example of leadership in action.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the Catholic faithful around the world. Pope Francis will be greatly missed,” he concluded.
