Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he unknowingly suffered from a 25 percent hearing loss, a condition that was discovered only after a medical check-up abroad.
Obasanjo shared this experience during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman-Adamu, on Sunday.
He noted that many individuals live with undiagnosed hearing impairments until they undergo tests to assess their hearing capacity. He recalled an incident where he had difficulty hearing someone speaking to him. After a hearing examination, it was determined that he was 25 percent deaf.
“I was taken aback by the result and even had my Chief Security Officer tested. To my surprise, his hearing loss was even more severe,” Obasanjo recounted.
This personal experience led him to establish the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, which has provided ear treatments and hearing aids to thousands of Nigerians through a partnership with the Starkey Hearing Foundation.
Obasanjo also announced a new initiative under the foundation to distribute hearing aids to 10,000 underprivileged individuals across the North-East, beginning with 2,000 recipients in Bauchi State.
