The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has assured stakeholders of the Commission’s commitment to developing deaf sports in Nigeria.
Dikko gave the assurance while receiving a delegation from the Nigeria Deaf Sports Federation (NDSF), led by its President, Dagbo Suleiman Saka, along with members from various states, during a working visit on Friday, February 7, 2025.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Chairman to understand the challenges facing the Federation specifically and Special Sports in general. While pledging to address the Federation’s immediate needs, Dikko reaffirmed the Commission’s support in advancing deaf sports and creating a viable platform for persons with special needs to showcase their talents.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Ajayi Kehinde, Director of Information and Public Relations at NSC, Dikko said:
“I congratulate you on your efforts to pursue what you love and remain passionate despite the challenges you face. Your determination and self-belief are commendable. With increased collaboration, I believe we can create shared prosperity and hope for everyone involved.”
He emphasized the Commission’s commitment to inclusivity in sports.
“We are here for sports in general—whether for men, women, or persons with disabilities. We do not show preferences. We will work diligently to resolve your immediate challenges as soon as possible,” he assured.
Dikko also highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s keen interest in supporting persons with disabilities.
“The President is committed to providing opportunities for everyone. You are aware that he has appointed a Special Adviser on Disability Matters, which underscores his dedication to the welfare of persons with disabilities. Our actions here align with the President’s mandate,” he stated.
He further noted that the NSC had been proactive and intentional in budgeting for the growth of para sports, ensuring the provision of essential equipment and kits to enhance the sport.
“Beyond scaling up the sport, we are committed to creating the right platform for you to experience a sense of fulfillment. This initiative is not just about sports—it’s also about creating jobs and improving livelihoods,” he added.
The NSC Chairman commended the Federation for its participation in international tournaments, where it has won medals and positively represented Nigeria.
He also encouraged them to go beyond national tournaments by organizing developmental competitions across various states. In alignment with his directive to all sports federations, he requested the NDSF to submit details of their programs for the year.
“I want you to know that my Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, is a strong advocate for para sports. In his private capacity, he has contributed immensely to the sector and even contested for the presidency of the Para Federation. Now, as the DG of the Commission, you can consider this place your home,” he concluded.
