Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant move to combat hunger and promote inclusive development, the Federal Government of Nigeria has partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through agriculture.
The partnership was announced by Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, following a strategic engagement with the FAO Country Representative ad Interim for Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Dominique Koffy Kouacou.
According to Hon. Isa, the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which underscores the importance of inclusivity, dignity, and empowerment for all Nigerians, especially marginalized communities.
“I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve forged a strategic partnership with the FAO. This collaboration is a major step toward ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation,” he said.
Mr. Kouacou, in response, pledged FAO’s full support for the initiative. “I am pleased to see the vision and commitment of your office. FAO stands ready to provide the technical support and resources needed to begin implementation immediately,” he affirmed.
Hon. Isa commended FAO for its commitment to inclusive development, noting that the partnership will support Nigeria’s efforts to meet key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — including No Poverty (SDG 1), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10).
“This collaboration represents a beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians living with disabilities. By promoting inclusive agriculture, we are not only fighting hunger but also creating sustainable pathways for empowerment,” Isa added.
The initiative is expected to commence immediately, with joint efforts to build capacity, provide resources, and integrate PWDs into agricultural value chains across the country.
