Abuja, Nigeria — The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has joined the global community in celebrating the 2025 International Week of the Deaf, with this year’s theme: “With Deaf People, We Can Achieve.”

The annual observance shines a spotlight on the rights, voices, and contributions of deaf persons worldwide, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to inclusivity and equality.

Speaking on the occasion, Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, emphasized that the celebration is more than symbolic. “The International Week of the Deaf is not just a celebration; it is a powerful reminder of the resilience, creativity, and contributions of deaf persons to our society. At NCPWD, we are committed to promoting accessible communication, enforcing the Disability Act, and ensuring equal opportunities for deaf persons to thrive,” he said.

The Commission outlined its efforts to strengthen inclusion, including the promotion of sign language interpretation in public institutions, nationwide awareness campaigns, interpreter training, and partnerships with disability organizations. It further called on government bodies, private institutions, civil society, and the media to stand in solidarity with deaf Nigerians.

NCPWD urged citizens to use the week as a call to action, stressing that accessibility, inclusivity, and equity should be seen as guaranteed rights, not privileges.
