The University of Ilorin has presented a Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. Opeoluwa Sotonwa in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the growth of the institution and his remarkable global impact in disability advocacy and public service.
Dr. Sotonwa was among seventeen recipients honored during the University’s 50th (Golden Jubilee) Anniversary Alumni Colloquium Day and Award Presentation held on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the UNILORIN Auditorium.
Speaking while receiving the award on behalf of Dr. Sotonwa, his representative, Dr Mrs. Barakat Raji, Faculty of Law University of Ilorin, delivered the acceptance remarks in which Dr. Sotonwa expressed deep gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN, the award committee, faculty, and the entire university community for deeming him worthy of the honor. He described the recognition as one that “humbles me and strengthens my resolve to serve even more faithfully.”
Dr. Sotonwa, a distinguished alumnus of the institution, described the University of Ilorin as a defining force in his life, noting that it instilled in him the discipline to think critically, the courage to lead boldly, and the conviction to serve humanity. “Every milestone I have achieved and every barrier I have worked to dismantle carry the imprint of the University of Ilorin,” he said, dedicating the award to the professors, colleagues, and students who shaped his journey.
He reaffirmed his commitment to continue representing Unilorin with excellence and to support the next generation of scholars, particularly through disability-focused initiatives, mentorship, and expanded educational opportunities. “I will go the extra mile to ensure that the name of this university remains synonymous with outstanding character and transformative impact,” he pledged.
Dr. Opeoluwa Sotonwa is a globally respected disability rights advocate and public-sector leader, currently serving as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the United States. A graduate of the University of Ilorin, Nigerian Law School, Howard University, and Northeastern University, he has shaped major accessibility and civil rights reforms across several U.S. states. He is also the founder of the Opeoluwa Sotonwa Foundation, which has awarded over 100 scholarships to students in Nigeria, particularly at Unilorin.
