The Nasarawa government has repatriated about 788 almajiri children in the state to where they had come from.
The PUNCH quoted Abdullahi Sule, the state governor, as announcing this on Sunday.
He made this known while addressing the first batch of the almajiri kids who are said to have been residing in the southern zone of the state.
The governor said the children are being sent to their home states for proper care which he said was recently agreed upon by the northern governors.
“The plan to repatriate the almajiris is of good intention and not in bad motive,” he was quoted as saying.
A number of other states, mostly in the north, have also been sending the children back to their home states.
Some of them have tested positive for COVID-19.
Usually within the age range of four years to 15 years, the almajiri kids are often placed in care of teachers who would prepare them for learning the basics of Quranic education.
Most of them end up begging for alms and food in their neighbourhood as these teachers are usually unable to meet their needs.
