In a significant leadership shift, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda has been unanimously elected as the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The decision, reached through consensus at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Thursday at the State House, Abuja, was initiated by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State and seconded by House Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
Yilwatda, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, was immediately sworn in and took an oath to uphold the party’s constitution and drive its vision of unity and progress.
Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and party stakeholders, the newly sworn-in chairman pledged to promote internal democracy and expand the party’s reach. “We will build a stronger, united APC that Nigerians can believe in,” he said.
His election follows the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who stepped down citing health concerns.
Known for his technocratic competence and loyalty to the party, Yilwatda also contested as the APC gubernatorial candidate in Plateau State during the 2023 elections. His leadership is expected to usher in a new phase of reform and consolidation ahead of future polls.
The NEC meeting, presided over by President Tinubu, was attended by top party figures including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Abbas, several APC governors, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and members of the National Working Committee.
