Hon. Ayuba Gufwan has commended the Lagos State Government for its steadfast dedication to empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
Speaking at the conclusion of the “Removing Barriers” entrepreneurship training program, Hon. Gufwan reiterated the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) commitment to fostering an inclusive society where PWDs can achieve financial independence and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment in partnership with the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), equipped participants with critical entrepreneurial skills. Hon. Gufwan emphasized that disability should never equate to inability, urging more states to replicate Lagos’ proactive approach to disability rights.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration received praise for its trailblazing efforts, particularly for enacting Nigeria’s first Disability Law. The General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde Lawal, reaffirmed the agency’s mission to ensure PWDs enjoy equal opportunities across Lagos.
Meanwhile, Hon. Akinyemi Bankole Ajigbotafe, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, reassured beneficiaries that the government remains committed to sustaining investments in disability empowerment.
As part of the closing ceremony, the Director of Entrepreneurship Development, Mrs. Taiwo Abiose, awarded certificates to graduates and announced access to start-up loans, allowing them to immediately apply their newly acquired skills.
In a related development, Hon. Gufwan visited LASODA for discussions on strengthening intergovernmental collaboration, enhancing access to assistive technologies, and ensuring full implementation of policies that promote disability inclusion. He emphasized that with the right policies and advocacy, Nigeria can become a model of disability inclusion in Africa.
