KATSINA — The Katsina State Government has outlined strategic initiatives to enhance the welfare and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the state.
Speaking on August 7, 2025, at a community needs assessment Town Hall meeting in Bindawa Local Government Area, Hon. Umar Jibril Bindawa, Special Assistant on Disabled Matters, presented a detailed plan under the Community Development Programme (CDP). The meeting was part of a citizens’ engagement exercise held simultaneously across all 361 wards in the state to gather grassroots development priorities for the 2026 citizens’ budget and foster inclusive planning.
The initiatives include promoting inclusive education, offering economic empowerment schemes such as a N2.5 million package for 50 PWDs, improving accessibility through wheelchair-friendly infrastructure, expanding healthcare and assistive device support, training community development workers on disability inclusion, and boosting livelihood opportunities in agriculture, livestock, and entrepreneurship.
Bindawa reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the 5% employment quota for PWDs, noting that ongoing community development programmes have already empowered over 132,000 residents. He emphasised that implementing these measures would improve independence, economic opportunities, and participation in decision-making for PWDs.
