Katsina — In a move to strengthen inclusive governance, Umar Jibril Bindawa, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Disabled Matters, met with the newly elected Chairman of Katsina Local Government, Hon. Isah Miqdad AD Saude, on Tuesday, April 9.
The meeting, held at the local government secretariat, aimed at establishing a strong working relationship between the local government leadership and the Katsina State Community of Persons with Disabilities.
During the engagement, both parties explored avenues for collaboration that would create meaningful opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the state. Discussions focused on inclusive employment, economic empowerment, education, and representation in governance.
Hon. Bindawa emphasized the need for job opportunities that cater to the unique abilities of PWDs. “Providing employment tailored to the skills of persons with disabilities will not only empower them economically but also allow them to contribute meaningfully to their communities,” he said.
The duo also deliberated on the importance of empowerment programs such as vocational training, entrepreneurship development, and access to microfinance. Hon. Saude expressed readiness to support such initiatives, affirming his commitment to inclusive development.
Creating inclusive workplaces was another key point of discussion. Both parties agreed that promoting diversity and accessibility in the work environment would help build a more equitable society.
The conversation also highlighted the importance of education for persons with disabilities. Hon. Bindawa stressed that access to quality and inclusive education, including scholarships and accessible learning materials, is crucial for the long-term success of PWDs.
A significant proposal raised during the meeting was the appointment of Special Assistants on Disability Matters across all 34 Local Government Areas in Katsina State. This, according to Hon. Bindawa, would ensure that disability issues are effectively represented at the grassroots level. Chairman Saude welcomed the idea and acknowledged the potential impact of such appointments in advancing disability inclusion.
“This partnership signals a step forward in creating an enabling environment for persons with disabilities in Katsina State,” Hon. Bindawa noted, expressing optimism about the future of disability-inclusive governance in the state.
