The Ogun State Government, under the leadership of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
Speaking at the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) held at Fatty Lammy Recreation Center, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun emphasized the state’s resolve to create an inclusive environment where the hidden abilities and potential of PWDs are fully explored and celebrated.
INN reports that the event, themed “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” brought together stakeholders, beneficiaries, and well-wishers to celebrate the achievements and discuss the way forward for disability rights and inclusion in Ogun State.
In her address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, highlighted the various policies and initiatives implemented by the Ogun State Government to foster a conducive environment for PWDs. She encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the resources and support provided to them effectively, emphasizing their role in the development of the state.
Mrs. Adejumoke Adewole, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, delivered a heartfelt welcome address, setting the tone for a memorable celebration.
Delivering the keynote address, the former Chairman of the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Kunle Ashimi, stressed the importance of amplifying the leadership of PWDs. He called for sustained efforts to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for everyone, irrespective of physical or mental challenges.
Goodwill messages were delivered by notable personalities, including the Chairman of JONAPWD Ogun State, Dr. Michael Ebonhor, and Olori Ameenat Matemilola, the wife of the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Abeokuta. Cluster heads of various disability groups also reiterated their commitment to advancing the cause of PWDs in Ogun State.
In a gesture of empowerment, beneficiaries from the six clusters under JONAPWD Ogun State received various items to support their businesses and mobility devices to aid their daily lives. These items represent the government’s commitment to empowering PWDs and enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society.
The Director of Rehabilitation, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Funminiyi Olekanma, expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries. She commended the government for its dedication and urged continued collaboration to ensure the welfare of PWDs in the state.
The 2024 IDPD celebration in Ogun State underscored the government’s dedication to inclusivity and provided a platform for PWDs to showcase their abilities while fostering partnerships to create a better and more sustainable future for all.
