The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has renewed its call for the strengthening of disability-inclusive policies and the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 across Nigeria.
The appeal comes as part of this year’s observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, themed “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” The theme underscores the significant role Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) can play in building a society that leaves no one behind.
In a statement signed by Godwin Unumeri, Acting Director of CCD, the organization emphasized the urgency of creating opportunities for PWDs to lead, innovate, and thrive.
“Today, we highlight the critical need to eliminate barriers preventing PWDs from realizing their full potential,” Unumeri remarked. “Despite their immense contributions to national progress, PWDs often face systemic exclusion in education, healthcare, employment, and access to public infrastructure.”
Reflecting on the day’s importance, Unumeri described PWDs as “leaders, innovators, and essential contributors” who can help shape a more inclusive and sustainable future. He called for concerted efforts to break down the barriers that marginalize PWDs and hinder their full participation in society.
The CCD urged federal and state governments, alongside civil society and the private sector, to ensure accessibility in public spaces, transportation, and digital platforms. The statement also emphasized the need for inclusive employment practices, quality education, and policies addressing climate adaptation and disaster response to reflect the needs of PWDs.
Reiterating CCD’s commitment to advocating for PWD rights, Unumeri encouraged stakeholders to take actionable steps in promoting disability inclusion. “Let us work together to amplify the leadership of PWDs and build a future where everyone, regardless of ability, is empowered to contribute to national development,” he concluded.
