In a powerful show of support, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated vital mobility aids to persons with disabilities in Bayelsa State, reaffirming its commitment to inclusion and empowerment.
The donation was made during a special awareness programme hosted at the NDDC Bayelsa State Office in Yenagoa. Representing the NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the State Director, Engr. Godknows Alamiesiegha, encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace self-worth and never see disability as a limitation.
“Life itself is a gift. You are valuable, and you matter,” he said. “At NDDC, we are dedicated to promoting social welfare and inclusivity for all. This is just one of many steps we’re taking to support you.”
Ogbuku further assured that the welfare of persons with disabilities would remain a key priority for the Commission.
Also present at the event, Hon. Nyenye Kuro Matthias, Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa State Governor on NDDC matters, described the initiative as a landmark moment.
“This is the first time we’re seeing such a well-organised outreach specifically for persons with disabilities in Bayelsa. We’re deeply grateful,” he said, while advocating for the inclusion of PWDs in training and employment opportunities under NDDC programmes.
Mental health took centre stage as well, with Dr. Daniel Smile George drawing attention to the often-unseen disability of mental health challenges. He called for greater awareness and early interventions to reduce stigma and promote healing.
Appreciation poured in from the disability community. Mr. Ekpomokumor Mayor, Chairman of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Bayelsa State, commended the NDDC and medical team for their efforts.
One of the recipients, Mr. Dennis Stephen, who received a wheelchair, shared his personal testimony: “Getting around had been a daily struggle. Today, I have a renewed sense of freedom. I’m truly thankful.”
The NDDC distributed a wide range of aids, including wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, hearing aids, visual aids, and tools for the visually impaired—giving many the gift of mobility and dignity.
