The Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) has unveiled a groundbreaking publication titled “A Practical Guide for Inclusive Climate Actions for Women and Girls with Disabilities.” This pioneering resource marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind in Nigeria, designed to integrate disability rights into the national climate action discourse.

The guide addresses the urgent need to recognize and respond to the unique challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in the context of climate change. According to AWWDI, these individuals are among the most disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, facing increased risks of displacement, health complications, and economic instability. Despite these vulnerabilities, they are often excluded from climate-related decision-making processes and policy interventions.

In response, the new guide lays out comprehensive and practical strategies aimed at ensuring full inclusion. It emphasizes the importance of disability-inclusive climate action planning and advocates for more equitable access to climate finance. The publication also explores adaptation and resilience approaches tailored to the needs of women and girls with disabilities, while framing climate change as a human rights and social justice issue.

Beyond analysis, the guide serves as a call to action for a wide range of stakeholders, including policymakers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society groups, organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), development partners, and community leaders. It urges these actors to adopt inclusive practices that prioritize the voices and lived experiences of women with disabilities in shaping climate policy and programs.

AWWDI expressed hope that this resource will inspire collaborative action and policy reform, contributing to a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for all Nigerians.
