The Bauchi State Association of the Deaf (BSAD) recently paid an advocacy visit to the Project Coordinator of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), Hon. Aliyu Sule Gar, to discuss the inclusion of deaf girls in the program’s initiatives.
During the meeting, Hon. Aliyu Sule Gar reiterated AGILE’s mission, emphasizing that the World Bank-supported project aims to enhance secondary school education opportunities for adolescent girls between the ages of 10 and 20. He highlighted that AGILE also provides second-chance education, offering young women who have missed formal schooling an opportunity to re-engage with the education system.
As part of AGILE’s implementation strategy in Bauchi State, Hon. Gar announced the recruitment of 3,000 teachers to strengthen the quality of education delivery. He explained that 2,000 teachers would be deployed to Junior Secondary Schools, while 1,000 teachers would be assigned to Senior Secondary Schools across the state.
Additionally, he revealed that AGILE is set to commence Conditional Cash Transfers to support the education of approximately 9,000 registered girls. Under this initiative, each beneficiary will receive: ₦15,000 for registration fees, ₦20,000 stipend for the first term, ₦10,000 stipend for the second and third terms, provided they maintain at least 75% attendance.
The BSAD Executive Council commended Hon. Aliyu Sule Gar for his dedication to improving educational access and expressed confidence in his leadership. They also appreciated his assurance that the deaf community would be considered in the employment of teachers, ensuring greater inclusivity in the education sector.
BSAD further emphasized that the recruitment of teachers and the rollout of financial support for girls are crucial steps toward addressing educational challenges in Bauchi State, particularly for adolescent girls, including those with disabilities.
