For Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, the journey to leadership has not been without scars. Growing up with albinism, he endured relentless bullying, body-shaming, and rejection—experiences that once made people doubt his chances of ever holding public office.
But today, standing tall as Nigeria’s first governor with albinism, Eno says his story is proof that stigma can be defeated.
“Growing up with albinism wasn’t easy. I faced bullying, body-shaming, and rejection. But by God’s grace, I now stand proudly,” he told participants at a special event organised for persons with albinism.
The governor recalled how critics mocked his appearance during his election campaign, declaring they would never support “an albino governor.” Yet in his darkest moments, he found strength in his wife’s words of encouragement.
“She would always call me her golden boy. And when people tried to use my skin against me, she reminded me of my worth,” Eno said with emotion.
Now determined to use his position to uplift others, the governor pledged unwavering support for people with albinism, declaring them “golden people” whose dignity must be respected.
“They used to body-shame us and push us to the sidelines. But today, God has turned things around. That’s why I will always recognise and celebrate anyone with albinism,” he affirmed.
