Kanawa Educational Foundation for the Disabled has called on government to make menstrual pads affordable for women and girls with disabilities.
The foundation made the call while distributing sanitary pads to 30 women and girls with disabilities to commemorate the world menstrual hygiene day on Tuesday, 28 May, 2024.
Speaking during the event, Mrs. Bridget Akinluwa from Zenith bank highlights the importance of maintaining personal hygiene and urged government to subsidize menstrual pads for women and girls with disabilities especially in rural areas.
She also encouraged women and girls with disabilities to take good care of their bodies, and health in general.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director of Kanawa Educational Foundation for the Disabled, Hussaina Umar advised girls with disabilities to always be neat and emphasised on the effect of not been neat during their period. She used the opportunity to create a safe space for the girls.
“You should be very careful during your period, don’t leave your pad for more than three hours, change it often, leaving it for too long will result in infections and please we should try to stop the culture of silent, because I know alot of you have been abuse but nobody is talking about it.” She said
Sadiya Abdullahi Yaro from the women health empowerment and emancipation initiative, enlightened girls with disabilities on appropriate ways of using menstrual pads.
A beneficiary, Fiddausi Salihu thanked the organisers for the donation and urged other organisations to emulate the gesture shown to them by the foundation.
