FAECARE Foundation’s Hope Again Initiative Plus Cucumber Farming Project is a community-based training and farming program intended to improve the economic status and well-being of Persons with Disabilities through cucumber farming.
In partnership with World Connect and JONAPWD, Obot Akara Chapter, the FAECARE Foundation has just trained and supported 20 Persons with Disabilities (12 male and 8 female) in Nto Edino community, Obot Akara LGA in Akwa Ibom State on cucumber farming.
Executive Director of the Foundation, Ndifreke Andrew-Essien disclosed that “the project was particularly exciting because though a farming community, many PWDs are unable to cope with the rigours of long farming seasons and difficulties of cultivating some staple crops. Cucumber Farming which has a relatively short farming cycle was therefore quickly embraced.
“After series of trainings on cucumber farming and business, twenty (20) Persons with Disabilities from the community were selected to participate – among these, eight women.
“Produce from all 20 farms were harvested and marketed and many beneficiaries have gone on to start more farms after the project ended.
“We thank World Connect for their support in this empowerment for PWDs. It was really empowering and life changing.” Ndifreke said.
