Chief of Staff to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has emphasized the administration’s commitment to promoting Nigerian Sign Language in education and beyond, aiming to empower the deaf community.
Gbajabiamila gave the assurance at the 2nd National Summit on Deaf Education in Nigeria organized by the Nigerian Association of the Deaf on 13 and 14 of March, 2024.
Represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mohammed Abba Isa, Gbajabiamila highlighted the importance of incorporating sign language into the education system to ensure meaningful access for deaf learners and stressed the need for collective efforts from government, educators, parents, and communities to achieve inclusivity and celebrate diversity.
He also emphasized on necessary steps the FG will take in increasing sign language interpreters in schools, integrating sign language into teacher training, and raising awareness about deaf rights and needs.
