The Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission (NSDRC) has called for the full enforcement of the five per cent employment quota for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state.

The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Saleh Barde Keana, made the call during an official working visit to the Rector of the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Lafia, Dr. Musa Yahaya Maikafi.

Barde Keana commended the Rector for his commitment to improving educational standards in Nasarawa State but expressed concern over the high rate of unemployment among graduates with disabilities, despite the state government’s free education policy. He stressed the need for employment opportunities that would enable qualified PWDs to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.

The NSDRC Chairman also lamented the failure of many MDAs to comply with the five per cent employment quota. To reinforce the directive, he presented the Rector with a copy of the instruction issued by Governor Abdullahi Sule through the Head of Service, mandating government agencies to reserve employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

In his response, Dr. Maikafi appreciated the NSDRC Chairman for the visit and pledged to ensure that qualified persons with disabilities are given employment opportunities within the institution. He reaffirmed his commitment to disability inclusion, describing himself as an advocate of the principle that ability exists in disability.
