Disability Commission Partners Initiative to Promote Rights of Children with Disabilities

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Queen’s Dream Initiative (QDI), a non-profit organization founded to champion the rights and welfare of children with disabilities in Nigeria.

The initiative, established by a young advocate who began her journey at the age of nine, is currently being led by the 18-year-old law student at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Through QDI, she has focused on providing school essentials for children with disabilities and amplifying their voices in the struggle for inclusion.

During a courtesy visit to the NCPWD headquarters, discussions highlighted opportunities for collaboration aimed at strengthening support systems for children with disabilities across the country.

The Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, applauded the effort, describing it as “a very commendable initiative.” He noted that “great things begin from humble beginnings” and encouraged QDI to expand its reach beyond Abuja to all parts of Nigeria and beyond.

“We pray that the Queen’s Dream Initiative will flourish and extend its impact across Nigeria and to the world,” Gufwan said.

He further urged the initiative to adopt creative and sustainable approaches to fundraising, citing the Dash Me Foundation as a successful charity model.

The Commission also praised the founder for her resilience and dedication, while her mother, Mrs. Shade Ogundairo, expressed pride in her daughter’s achievements. She emphasized the importance of collaboration, consistency, and support in advancing the rights of children with disabilities.

Both organizations pledged to deepen ties and develop programs that would empower children with disabilities, promote equal opportunities, and ensure their full inclusion in society.

The partnership is expected to chart new pathways for protecting the rights of children with disabilities in Nigeria, while reinforcing the shared commitment of NCPWD and QDI to build a society where every child, regardless of disability, can thrive.
