Gombe — In a heartwarming display of inclusion and solidarity, the Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (GSCPWD) hosted a special Children’s Day celebration with students from the Center for Special Education.
The event, which took place at the Commission’s temporary office, was filled with joy, performances, and a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to the rights and welfare of children with disabilities.
In his address, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Ishiyaku Adamu, emphasized the Gombe State Government’s unwavering dedication to empowering persons with disabilities, particularly children. He praised the leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for supporting the enactment of the recently signed Gombe State Disability Law.
According to Adamu, the law ensures the rights of children with disabilities to inclusive and quality education, access to affordable healthcare, and the removal of physical and societal barriers that restrict their participation in the community.
He also highlighted another key legislative milestone—the Gombe State Disability Prohibition Law—which mandates free education at all levels in public institutions for persons with disabilities. Encouraging the children to take their education seriously, he urged them to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society, stressing that the time has come to end marginalization and street begging.
The event drew attendance from Commission board members and staff, leaders from various disability clusters, teachers, and members of the media.
Highlights of the celebration included vibrant performances and presentations by the children, a colorful parade, and heartfelt prayers for the continued support of Governor Yahaya. The celebration not only showcased the talents of the children but also underscored the importance of visibility, dignity, and opportunity for all.
Concluding the event, Chairman Adamu promised that next year’s Children’s Day celebration would be even bigger, as part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusion and empowerment across Gombe State.
