In a groundbreaking partnership, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), and the Lagos branch of the Red Cross Society are joining hands to improve emergency rescue protocols. The collaboration is aimed at spreading awareness about the best practices for rescuing accident victims, especially focusing on first aid and proper handling to avoid worsening injuries.
Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, the General Manager of LASODA, highlighted the urgency of educating the public on how to respond to accidents effectively. She explained that a lack of proper first aid knowledge can cause further harm to victims, a common but preventable issue.
Speaking at a joint meeting with the Red Cross and SCIAN at the Red Cross Office on Makoko Road, Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal expressed LASODA’s dedication to driving awareness across Lagos.
She assured that the agency would work hand in hand with SCIAN and the Red Cross to train the public on first aid and rescue techniques, ensuring that accident victims receive timely and appropriate care.
Mr. Abdul-Wahab Matepo, Chairman of SCIAN and a spinal cord injury survivor, shared personal insight into the problem, pointing out that the improper handling of accident victims often leads to life-threatening complications.
“Many people’s injuries escalate not from the initial accident, but from how they are moved afterward,” he cautioned.
He encouraged the Red Cross to extend its training to those directly involved in rescue operations and suggested the creation of a road crash victim support fund to provide financial assistance for immediate medical care.
Addressing these issues, Mr. Ige Oladimeji, the Red Cross Branch Training Director, reassured the stakeholders that the Red Cross collaborates with organizations like NSCDC and NURTW to train key personnel in accident rescue techniques. He reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring that all rescue efforts are conducted with care, precision, and the necessary knowledge.
