Umuahia, May 28, 2025 — In a bold step towards promoting inclusive governance, the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) on Wednesday held a one-day capacity-building workshop focused on enhancing the participation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in decision-making processes.
The event, held in Umuahia, brought together stakeholders from government ministries, civil society, and the disability community. In his welcome address, the Acting Director of CCD, Mr. Godwin Unumeri, extended warm greetings to participants and provided an overview of the programme’s objectives.
Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of the Office of the Attorney General, Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Budget and Planning, and the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons. In his remarks, the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. David Anyaele, commended CCD for its relentless efforts in promoting the rights of PWDs. The representatives also reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to inclusive governance, social equity, and equal opportunities for all citizens, including persons with disabilities.
Highlighting the core of the workshop, Dr. Babatunde Asenuga, the resource person, delivered a detailed presentation on Understanding Disability Rights and Participation in Governance. His session sparked a robust discussion among participants, who shared their experiences and recommendations.
Key among the suggestions made was the need for increased community outreach and grassroots sensitization on disability rights. Participants called for the production of disability-related laws in accessible formats, including braille, to ensure that no one is left behind. There were also strong appeals for the political empowerment of PWDs, unity among disability groups, and the appointment of Disability Desk Officers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment among participants to apply the knowledge gained and to advocate for broader inclusion and representation of PWDs in governance and policy-making structures.
