Association Of Sign Language Interpreters In Nigeria (ASLIN) National President, Timothy Tinat, has been elected Board Secretary to the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI).
Tinat, a Nigerian, won against his only opponent, Erin Trine in an election held at the general assembly of the WASLI as part of the ongoing WASLI 2023 Quadrennial conference, in Jeju South Korea.
Mr Timothy Tinat had in 2019 contested for the same position against the then incumbent, Dr. Isabelle Heyerick, from Belgium, who is now the outgoing secretary, but lost. He won in his second attempt against Erin Trine from the US.
The election happens once in every four years with each country having a single vote. This year’s conference/elections took place in Jeju Island of South Korea. To stand a chance to contest for any position you must be nominated by your country or any other country in your region.
In a statement signed by Joseph Sunny Collins, Secretary General, ASLIN, said the association is pleased to announce the emergence of the National President, Timothy Tinat, as the new Board Secretary of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI).
According to Collins, “This significant role assumption reflects our association’s commitment to strong leadership and our continuous efforts to advance the interests of our members and stakeholders.
“Timothy Tinat have been an integral part of our association for over a decade, serving as the President of our national body ASLIN with utmost dedication and professionalism.
“During his tenure, he had demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by our profession.
“As the new WASLI Secretary, Timothy will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the World body WASLI and bringing to bare his vast experience and knowledge in the field of Sign language professionalism, while injecting new perspectives and fresh ideas to drive our association forward.”
The Sign Language Interpreters Association expressed full confidence in Timothy’s ability to strengthen the association’s position as a leading advocate for the industry.
