The Akwa Ibom State Government is exploring opportunities to promote the economic independence of persons with disabilities (PWDs) through inclusive agricultural empowerment.

The State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, gave the indication on Monday, October 19, 2026, while receiving a proposal from El Kanis And Partners Agriculture and Technology Innovation at the ministry’s conference room.

Ibanga commended the organisation for its initiative, describing it as consistent with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, PhD. She noted that the proposed programme could reduce economic dependency among persons with disabilities, improve their livelihoods and support the government’s efforts to move beneficiaries from palliative assistance to sustainable self-reliance.

The commissioner assured the organisation of the ministry’s continued support for partnerships with groups committed to improving the welfare and socioeconomic inclusion of persons with disabilities across the state.

Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of El Kanis And Partners, Mr Ekanikpong Ben, presented the proposed Inclusive Agricultural Livelihood and Enterprise Development Programme for Persons with Disabilities, seeking the ministry’s partnership for its implementation.

Ben explained that the initiative was developed within the framework of the organisation’s engagement with the Mastercard Foundation and builds on its existing rice production, paddy procurement and processing operations.

He added that the programme would provide beneficiaries with relevant agricultural training and interest-free production inputs to support their farming activities.

According to him, the initiative is designed to go beyond short-term assistance by equipping persons with disabilities with practical skills, productive assets and access to viable agricultural markets to promote sustainable livelihoods and long-term economic independence.
